Historians and former residents say Clayton, in effect, pushed out its Black population. Now some, from church leaders to city officials to regular Clayton residents, are considering how to make things right for the residents who left. The city is unveiling a plaque to commemorate the original location of the First Baptist Church. But perhaps, several say, the church deserves more than a historical marker for the actions of Clayton’s past.
