Daje Shelton grew up in St. Louis and became a mother at 17, with the father now incarcerated for murder. Her journey from involvement with gangs to finding the resolve to provide a better future for her son was recounted in a documentary, “For Ahkeem,” in 2017. Now 29, Shelton aspires to be a journalist and has taken classes at St. Louis Community College-Forest Park. This is her story of how the May 16 tornado affected her family and community.
